Incidental poetry — Part i

02 May

As I sit before a computer screen sipping
cups of coffee looking up gardening tips
for the coming spring, wondering what to grow
and how many rows apart, counting beans
yet sprung or preserves yet jarred,
my cat switches positions of sleep in a feline curl on the bed                                                                      whisker-twitched and flicks of tail with dreams aswirl in his head –
stalker of balls and bells and bunny dust
and the hell of a mess what’s left of a mouse
like yarn string from his lips
dangling, proud it would seem
to hone in and honor the velvet-svelte panther within,
also asleep in a sun puddle of dappled leaves                                                                                                breaching tree branches to pounce from above,
seizuring jungle scenes when he was still king
and I his helpless prey, not the plainclothes ape
with the tin can of din-din making little sweetums mew
like a domesticated baby.
